The challenge was to design and bind a book with abstract imagery to express my creative methodology.
“Filter” is a 30-page softcover book that communicates my philosophy that the world is abundant with influence, information and inspiration and my methodology is to filter whatever relevant to me.

To follow the theme of ‘filter’ I shot photographs of different types of filters available around me.

Pages

A package design project in collaboration with Dan Ogren. Dinnertime is a new pasta brand with strong emphasis on family gathering.
It distinguishes itself from competitors by making a bold statement and having a less traditional Italian look.

To establish its identity with black and orange, we produced the items with screen prints and vinyl prints.

After winning the Sparky Award, I was approached by SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) to produce a front page animation for their new website, Right to Research Coalition. Based on the style of the website, I animated their statistic data and message.

A promotional mailer designed for a fictional retrospective show by Negativland, an experimental culture jamming band based in the West Coast.
The mailer unfolds into two posters and a flyer. The main poster has laser-cut holes that is used to ‘decode’ the secret message.

By layering the two posters, the hidden message is revealed. Symbolic icons resembling Negativland’s achievements, the U2 airplane, the Cross, Nazi symbol and the copyrights icon are filtered through the die-cuts.

The challenge was to design a poster for Macbeth using stencils as the dominant design element and aiming Generation Y.
I used a game controller as a metaphor of Macbeth’s soul that gets controlled by his surroundings.

Process

A corporate identity made for a fictional design agency named Pressed Design Studio.
The agency was looking for a pop and youthful identity with a strong impact.

An integrated advertisement campaign designed for Outward Bound, a program to make at-risk teens challenge the wilderness.
I tried to reach to parents who are struggling to find a solution to family conflicts at home.

A rebranding idea for Animal Cops, a documentary program that follows the duty and drama of animal law enforcement officers in multiple cities.
To make potential viewers to stay on the channel after the previous show, I thought it was crucial to avoid introducing the depressing and unpleasant aspect of the show.

For a show promo, I took a narrative approach to tell a simple yet heartwarming story one may encounter watching Animal Cops.

Style frames

A poster to emphasize the issue of today’s frequent Salmonella outbreaks.
The poster casts light on one of the major causes of the outbreaks, the caged production of hens in poor sanitation and small spaces.

A website designed and built for an authentic Japanese restaurant Sushi Zen located in Savannah, GA.
I aimed for an elegant and clean look that brings the food photographs to stand out. A hint of red is a promise of staying true to Japanese food.

A logo idea for an existing pet supplies store, emphasizing casual atmosphere and inexpensive pricing.
It is a two-tone logo with a face of a dog resembling a grocery bag.

End Tag Animation

Because the logo had so much potential to be animated, I made a five-second animation incorporating more texture and color, and elements.

Process

A showcase of 3D models made in Maxon Cinema 4D. The project’s aim was to gain experience in modeling and animating in 3D.
I picked a firefly and designed a ‘industrial’ and a ‘futuristic’ versions of it playing on the characteristic of a firefly; the emission of yellow-green light.

The industrial firefly is a movable power plant that generates electricity and the illuminates a big light bulb.

Futuristic Firefly Stills

The futuristic firefly is equipped with a solar-power system hidden under the hatches.
Similarly, this generates power and illuminates the LED lights at its back.

As an entry to the Sparky Award 09, this video illustrates the value of sharing information.

Campus Movie Fest

It was a great honor to show and talk about this work at the Campus Movie Fest Southern Regional Grand Finale 2010 held in Atlanta, GA.

A title sequence made for the movie ‘Where The Wild Things Are.’
My approach was to illustrate how the world we take for granted as adults may look differently through the eyes of a child.
It parallels with how the boundary between reality and imagination is blurred in the original story by Maurice Sendak.
